Lost your EIN confirmation letter? How to get a 147C

You have the number but nothing proving it, and a bank wants documentation. This is the fix, and it is a phone call rather than a form.

The short answer

The IRS issues the CP 575 EIN confirmation notice once and does not produce duplicates. The replacement is a 147C letter, which confirms an existing EIN and is accepted by banks and payment processors. It is requested by telephone from the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line.

This situation is extremely common and entirely the fault of the process: the IRS online application displays the CP 575 once, and a great many founders download nothing, assuming a copy will arrive by email. None does.

Before you call

  • Your EIN, if you know it. Old filings, bank records or payment platform settings often have it.
  • The exact legal name of the entity as registered.
  • The address the IRS holds for the company.
  • Your position — you must be authorised to receive the information, typically as the responsible party or an officer.

If you do not know the EIN at all

Look before you call. The number commonly appears on a previously filed return, in a bank account application, in the tax settings of a payment processor, on a state filing, or in correspondence from an accountant. Reconstructing it from your own records is usually faster than the phone queue.

Once you have it, save it somewhere durable alongside your formation certificate — see the EIN guide for what the full document pack should contain.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download a copy of my CP 575?
No. The IRS generates the CP 575 once, at the point the EIN is assigned. If you applied online and closed the browser without saving it, there is no way to retrieve it. The 147C letter exists precisely for this situation.
Will a bank accept a 147C instead of a CP 575?
Yes. A 147C is the IRS's own confirmation of an existing EIN and is standard documentation for account opening. If an institution insists on a CP 575 specifically, ask them to check with their compliance team, because 147C is the recognised substitute.
Can I request one from outside the US?
Yes. The IRS operates a separate international line for callers outside the United States. You will need to verify your authority to receive company information, so be ready to confirm details about the entity.
