How marketplace payouts actually work
Every platform pays differently, holds differently, and deducts differently. Planning inventory against advertised revenue is how sellers run out of cash.
The short answer
Marketplaces settle on their own schedules — commonly every two weeks for Amazon, on a configurable schedule for Etsy, and rolling for Shopify Payments and Stripe. New accounts face longer schedules and sometimes reserves, so early revenue reaches your bank considerably later than it is earned.
| Platform | Typical settlement | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Roughly every two weeks | Reserves on new accounts; fees deducted pre-payout |
| Etsy | On your configured schedule | Fees and ad costs netted off |
| Shopify Payments | Rolling, on a set schedule | Country eligibility — not available everywhere |
| Own Stripe | Rolling, typically 2 days once established | Longer holds and reserves at the start |
Reconciling to the 1099-K
The platform reports gross to the IRS — before fees, refunds and chargebacks. Your 1099-K will therefore exceed your revenue. Record gross revenue plus separate expense lines for each deduction, and the two reconcile cleanly. Book only net deposits and they never will.

Frequently asked questions
- Why is my payout smaller than my sales?
- Platforms deduct their fees, advertising costs, refunds and chargebacks before settling. The deposit is net; the platform reports gross to the IRS on Form 1099-K. Your books must record gross revenue and each deduction separately to reconcile.
- What is a reserve and how long does it last?
- A percentage of transactions held back to cover potential refunds and chargebacks, released on a rolling schedule. New accounts and higher-risk categories are most likely to carry one. It is a genuine cash-flow constraint while it is in place.
- Can I get paid faster?
- Payout speed generally improves with transaction history and low dispute rates rather than by request. Some platforms offer expedited settlement for a fee, which is effectively short-term financing and priced accordingly.
