147C letter
A 147C letter is an IRS document confirming an existing Employer Identification Number, issued when the original CP 575 notice has been lost. Banks and payment processors accept a 147C letter as proof of EIN. It is requested by telephone from the IRS.
In plain terms: A replacement for the EIN letter you lost.
Why it matters
The practical answer to the very common problem of having an EIN but no document proving it. International callers use the IRS international line rather than the domestic Business and Specialty Tax Line.
